Question:

I am trying to explain to a believer about being filled with the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues. They are a Christian but don't know anything about the experience of being baptized with the Holy Spirit. Could you give me some scripture to help me explain this to them?

Answer:

1) God Want Us Full of His Power

Luke 24:49

49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Acts 1:8

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

2) The Holy Spirit is God’s Gift for Us

Acts 2:38-39

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

- Peter called the Holy Spirit a gift

- This gift is for all those who repent and receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior

Acts 1:4-5

4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

- Jesus told his disciples they would be baptized with the Holy Ghost

Acts 2:4

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

- When Jesus gave the his disciples this Gift of the Holy Spirit they were filled with power and began to speak in tongues

Eph 5:18-20

18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

- God wants his children filled with the Spirit (Holy Spirit)

3) Bible examples of receiving this gift

Matt 3:16-17

16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

- The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus at this time

Acts 2:4

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

- Everyone present was filled with the Spirit

  Acts 8:17

17Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

These believers received the Holy Spirit

Acts 9:17

17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

- Brother Saul was filled with the Holy Ghost here

Acts 10:47

47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

- The Holy Spirit filled everyone here who heard and believed the message

Acts 19:6

6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

- When Paul laid his hands on these disciples he came upon them and they spoke with other tongues

4) You receive your own spiritual language from God when you are filled with the Spirit

Acts 2:4

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

- The Spirit gave them utterance (what to say), and they spoke in other tongues

Acts 10:45-46

45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

- When the Gentile believers were filled with the Holy Spirit they began to speak in other tongues

Acts 19:6

6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

- When these believers were filled with the Holy Ghost they began to speak with other tongues

1 Cor 14:18

18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

- The Apostle Paul made this statement while writing to the Church at Corinth

It should be easy to see from these passages that the Holy Spirit is a gift to the church, believers. Every person and church that was filled with the Holy Spirit spoke with other tongues. This is a dispensation for the New Testament church. This is available for every single believer in the Body of Christ whether they take advantage of it or not.

Sincerely,

Pastor J
